The discussion focuses on enhancing the Physics Forums posting frame by adding a variety of useful symbols, particularly Greek letters and mathematical symbols. Users suggest incorporating symbols that are frequently used in technical discussions, such as fractions, inequalities, and various Greek letters, while expressing a desire for better organization and accessibility. Some participants highlight the need for symbols to be clickable without replacing previously selected ones, and others emphasize the importance of grouping similar symbols together for ease of use. Overall, there is a consensus on the utility of expanding the symbol options to improve communication within the forum. The conversation reflects a strong interest in making technical discussions more efficient and user-friendly.

tiny-tim, the "Learning LaTeX" link in your signature could use an update.

You're linking to the old sticky (which is no longer a sticky), but at least it contains a link to the new one. I just thought that you might want to link directly to the new one, but you can of course link to whatever you want to.

∅ is the empty set.

I agree that φ would be useful (occasionally).

here's a typical thread where ∅ looks horrible

Homework Statement

Prove that:
tan^2∅/tan∅ - 1 + cot^2∅/cot∅ - 1 = 1 + sec∅cosec∅

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I have solved the question taking tan∅ = sin∅/cos∅.
But I want to solve it some other way.

(i've taken to typing ψ instead of ∅)

can we please have φ ?

Well, yes, but that's like saying that the word "fo∅l" looks weird when one of the o's is replaced by the empty set symbol. It's not a phi, and to try to use it as a phi is quite bizarre.

φ is one of the more useful greek letters, so I wouldn't mind having it added to the list. It's not as useful as · though.

Do people really use ∴and ∠ ?
