SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the reactions at points A and B of a diving board subjected to two weights: a diving board weighing 36 kg and a person weighing 54 kg. The total downward force is calculated as -882.9 N, leading to the final reactions of Ax = 0 N, Ay = -1870 N, and By = 2740 N. The calculations utilize the principles of static equilibrium, confirming that the sum of vertical forces equals zero.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of static equilibrium principles
  • Knowledge of force summation in two dimensions
  • Familiarity with weight calculations using gravitational acceleration (g = 9.81 m/s²)
  • Basic concepts of support reactions in structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of static equilibrium in greater detail
  • Learn about calculating moments and torques in structural analysis
  • Explore the effects of varying weights on support reactions
  • Investigate real-world applications of diving board physics in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering courses, particularly those studying mechanics, as well as educators looking for practical examples of static equilibrium and support reactions.

Homework Statement

A_________B____________Wd_________Wp_
|--1.2m--|----1.2m------|---2.2m-----|

Above is a diving board with 2 weights on it. determine the reactions of A and B
wd= 36kg = weight of diving board
wp= 54kg = weight of person standing on diving board
point A = pin support
point B

Homework Equations

Ok so the sum of the forces in the x and y directions are as follows x = 0 because their are no x components. Y = -54gk(9.81m) + (-36kg(9.81m)) = 529.74 + 353.16 = -882.9N. After this i do not know what to do.

The Attempt at a Solution

Answers are Ax= 0, Ay = -1870N, By=2740N
