AI Thread Summary
The discussion confirms the algebraic representation of two numbers with a difference of 25. The larger number is denoted as x, while the smaller number is expressed as x - 25. The equation x - y = 25 is established, leading to the conclusion that y equals x - 25. Verification of the solution is suggested by calculating the difference between the two numbers. The responses affirm the correctness of the initial algebraic expressions.

Each two numbers whose difference is 25

x = larger number
x-25 = smaller number

Are my answers correct?

Thanks!

Let's let $x$ be the larger number and $y$ be the smaller. If their difference is 25, then we may state:

$$x-y=25$$

And so, upon solving for $y$, we find:

$$y=x-25$$

Yes, you are correct...you could also have checked you results by computing the difference between your two numbers to make certain their difference is 25:

$$x-(x-25)=25\checkmark$$

Seemingly by some mathematical coincidence, a hexagon of sides 2,2,7,7, 11, and 11 can be inscribed in a circle of radius 7. The other day I saw a math problem on line, which they said came from a Polish Olympiad, where you compute the length x of the 3rd side which is the same as the radius, so that the sides of length 2,x, and 11 are inscribed on the arc of a semi-circle. The law of cosines applied twice gives the answer for x of exactly 7, but the arithmetic is so complex that the...
