Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the claims made by FBI Director James B. Comey regarding Russian hacking of Republican Party computers. Participants explore the implications of these hacks, the security measures of the Republican National Committee (RNC), and the broader context of cyberattacks in political arenas.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express skepticism about the validity of the claims regarding Russian hacking, suggesting it may be part of a political game.
  • Concerns are raised about the security of critical infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants, and the rationale behind connecting them to open networks.
  • One participant notes that the information stolen from the RNC was from outdated domains and questions the significance of this data.
  • Another participant highlights that while Comey stated there was no evidence of successful hacking of the current RNC or Trump campaign, the possibility of indirect access through other compromised systems remains.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus; there are multiple competing views regarding the implications of the hacking claims and the overall security of political party systems.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the security measures in place and the potential for indirect access to systems, indicating a lack of clarity on the effectiveness of current cybersecurity protocols.

FBI chief says Russia hacked some Republican Party computers but didn't leak the information

Russian hackers stole information from state-level Republican Party computer servers and old Republican National Committee digital domains, FBI Director James B. Comey told a Senate panel Tuesday.

But that information wasn't leaked and posted online, he said.

That was in sharp contrast to the Russian hacks and leaks of thousands of emails from Democratic National Committee computers and from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta.

Trump has repeatedly denied that Russia was behind the hacks. He was briefed on the full classified intelligence report Friday, not just the portion made public.

On Saturday, he blamed the DNC for not protecting its computers, not Russia for conducting the hacks, and praised the RNC for having stronger cyberdefenses.

'cyberattacks' are in the news these days ... I don't believe it , some weird political game is being played... they are telling us the grid is vulnerable , nuke power plants are at risk!

Can someone tell me why anyone in their right mind would connect the control of a nuke power plant to an open phone line , that anyone can hack into if they get the passwords ...technicians inside the plant control things ... no need for an outside link!

It doesn't look like they didn't found anything interesting on the obsolete RNC domain that I read was only used for political event notifications by Graham and a few other senators when the new RNC servers were online.
It helps not to have people like Weiner with a password of p@ssw0rd using your systems.o0)

Comey later added that "there was evidence of hacking directed at state-level organizations, state-level campaigns, and the RNC, but old domains of the RNC, meaning old emails they weren't using. None of that was released."
Comey said there was no sign "that the Trump campaign or the current RNC was successfully hacked."

I'm going to close this so it doesn't go off topic, apparently the Russian hacking is widespread, not surprised. No sign of hacking doesn't necessarily mean no access if they had could get in from other computers that had access. That's just one way. But I'm sure it's being looked into.
