Feynman Diagram Help: Decay of ∆+ to n + π+

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the decay process of the ∆+ particle into a neutron and a pion, specifically focusing on the appropriate quark-level Feynman diagram and the interactions involved in this decay.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to sketch Feynman diagrams for both strong and weak interactions, questioning the appropriateness of each and how to determine which interaction is relevant for this decay.

Discussion Status

Participants have engaged in exploring the nature of the decay, with some suggesting that the strong force is the dominant interaction, while others affirm this by referring to the decay as a strong decay. There is an ongoing examination of the implications of using different interactions.

Contextual Notes

The original poster expresses uncertainty about the allowance of using both interactions in their diagrams and seeks clarity on how to discern the appropriate one for this specific decay process.

Homework Statement

:[/B]

For the decay of the ∆+ → n + π+, sketch an appropriate quark-level Feynman diagram.

State which interaction is responsible for this decay.

3. The Attempt at a Solution

This is more of a question to see if I'm doing it right more than anything. The first Feynman diagram is one where the strong force is responsible for the decay. The second one is one where the weak force is responsible, I'm not to sure if I'm allowed to do it both ways but if am how can I tell which one to use?

Both are allowed, but which do you think dominates?

strong force? Its a much stronger reaction.

Yes, and so we call it a strong decay.
