SUMMARY

Florida State University (FSU) is the leading institution for astrophysics research in Florida, making it a top choice for students interested in this field. Other notable options include Florida International University (FIU) and Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), both of which offer strong astronomy and physics programs with access to significant research facilities like the SARA telescopes. Students should consider applying for fellowships or scholarships to explore opportunities outside of Florida if financial constraints are a concern. A recommended academic path includes majoring in physics while taking courses in math, astronomy, and computer science.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of astrophysics fundamentals
  • Knowledge of physics and astronomy principles
  • Familiarity with scholarship and fellowship application processes
  • Basic computer science skills for data analysis in astrophysics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Florida State University's astrophysics program and faculty
  • Explore scholarship opportunities for Florida residents
  • Investigate Florida International University and Florida Institute of Technology's astronomy departments
  • Learn about the SARA telescopes and their research capabilities
USEFUL FOR

High school seniors in Florida interested in pursuing a degree in astrophysics, parents seeking educational options for their children, and anyone looking to understand the landscape of astrophysics education in Florida.

As you can tell by my username I am currently in a high school senior w/ a 3.0 GPA. Looking for colleges to apply to is a problem for me, I live in Florida and my mom won't let me go out of state. What college for my undergraduate should I go to? In astrophysics?

FSU is the cosmology and astrophysics center of Florida. In fact its the only one which has much active research on the topic.

Though I guess I should ask what in astrophysics are you interested in?

Also, if the reason you can't leave florida is because of $$, then you should try applying for fellowships or scholarships because there are lots of places outside florida which have great astrophysics programs as well.

FIU and FIT also have good astronomy and physics departments, with a lot of research professors and access to the SARA telescopes (one on Kitt Peak in AZ and one soon to begin operating in Chile). I suggest picking a physics major, and taking courses in math, astronomy, and computer science as well.
