Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a university student's uncertainty regarding their career path after not gaining admission to Electrical Engineering. The student expresses a desire to find alternative fields that incorporate their interests in math, circuits, and programming, while also seeking encouragement and advice from peers.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) is uncertain about their future after not being accepted into Electrical Engineering due to a low average and is seeking alternative paths that involve circuits, math, and programming.
  • Some participants suggest exploring Mechatronic Engineering as a possible alternative, noting it includes elements of electrical engineering but lacks the same level of specialization.
  • Another participant mentions that Mechanical Engineering is available but is more competitive to enter, which adds to the OP's concerns.
  • A different participant shares their experience of changing majors instead of redoing courses to improve GPA, expressing some regret about that decision and a desire to return to engineering later.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on potential alternative paths for the OP, with some suggesting Mechatronic Engineering while others highlight the competitiveness of Mechanical Engineering. The discussion reflects a mix of encouragement and personal experiences, but no consensus is reached on a definitive solution for the OP's situation.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes personal anecdotes and subjective experiences, which may not apply universally. The OP's feelings of discouragement and the challenges of GPA requirements are acknowledged but remain unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in similar situations of indecision regarding their academic and career paths, particularly those interested in engineering and related fields, may find this discussion relevant.

Hello everyone,

I am in my fourth year of University and still have no idea what I want to do. I completed the first year of Engineering last year, but I did not get into Electrical because my average was just over the minimum required and all the people with better averages got in.

I like math, although sometimes it's a struggle. I like circuits, digital logic etc..
Programming was my favorite course throughout my university career.

Anyways, after not getting into Electrical I am back at square one. They want me to redo courses to get my average up, but I just can't stand repeating a course I have already passed so I'm on the hunt for something else to do.

Is there anything besides Electrical Engineering that I could spend my time with circuits, math, programming etc..

I want to be successful and enjoy my job, every day that goes by I am getting more discouraged about my life, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Are you allowed to do mechatronic engineering? You want have the specialization that electrical has, but mechatronic does have the things you mentioned.

They offer Mechanical here, but that's harder to get into because more people do it. :(

Just know that you have tons of time, sure it sucks to have to redo classes and get that GPA up again..but it will be worth it. I was given the choice to take courses to bring GPA up and instead of spending another year doing that I changed major to graduate on time. I somewhat regret it now and I'm looking to go back to school to make engineering my bi**h :)

Thank you good sir, that might've been what I needed to hear.. Good luck with all your future endeavors as well!
