SUMMARY

Presenting a gift to a supervisor upon first meeting can create discomfort and awkwardness, as it may place the supervisor in a difficult position of feeling obligated to accept or refuse the gift. Instead, it is advisable to express gratitude through a simple thank you, which is considered perfectly acceptable. If a gift is still desired, it should be sent after the completion of the research period to avoid any potential issues. This approach ensures professionalism and maintains a positive relationship.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of professional etiquette in academic settings
  • Awareness of cultural differences in gift-giving
  • Basic communication skills for expressing gratitude
  • Familiarity with the dynamics of supervisor-student relationships
NEXT STEPS
  • Research professional etiquette in academic environments
  • Explore cultural norms regarding gift-giving in the UK
  • Learn effective ways to express gratitude in professional settings
  • Investigate appropriate follow-up communication after completing a research project
USEFUL FOR

International students, academic researchers, and anyone navigating professional relationships in a university setting.

Hello physicsforums!

This summer I will be doing a 3-month undergraduate-level research as an exchange student in a uk university.

Do you think it will be good to present a small gift to my supervisor upon meeting her later in uk? I have been thinking of giving something that is unique to my country. Do you think this is a good thing to do?

No, it is not.

You will also put her in an uncomfortable position. It doesn't look good for her to be receiving a gift, and she also may be torn in offending you if she refuses.

If you still wish to send here something as a thank you gift, send it waaaay after everything is over. Still, keep in mind that a simple thank you is perfectly acceptable to show an appreciation.

I see. Those are really good points. Glad I asked this question first.
Thanks Zz!
