SUMMARY

Graduate school admissions for a master's degree in electrical engineering primarily hinge on four critical factors: GRE scores, GPA, strong references, and research experience. While extracurricular activities may hold some weight in undergraduate admissions, they are generally less significant for graduate programs. Research accomplishments and relevant internships are essential indicators of a candidate's capability to succeed in graduate studies. Therefore, focusing on these key areas will enhance the chances of a successful application.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of GRE scoring and its impact on admissions
  • Knowledge of GPA requirements for graduate programs
  • Familiarity with the importance of academic references
  • Experience in conducting research or internships in electrical engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research effective GRE preparation strategies and resources
  • Explore how to strengthen academic references for graduate applications
  • Investigate opportunities for research projects in electrical engineering
  • Learn about the significance of internships in enhancing graduate school applications
USEFUL FOR

Prospective graduate students in electrical engineering, academic advisors, and anyone involved in the graduate admissions process seeking to understand the key factors influencing successful applications.

Hello fellow forumers. I've been digging around but to no avail in my search for guidelines to being successful with graduate school admissions. I'm hoping that those who have undergone this process can shed some light on this topic.

I am planning to pursue a masters degree in electrical engineering.

I know solid GRE score is imperative, but how important are extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports, and teams? Will doing research be more helpful than extracurriculars?

What are other important factors in admissions to a master's degree program?

Thank you.

Your GPA, for one... Research also looks good.

I think extracurricular activities like clubs and sports are important for undergraduate admissions, but are not really looked at for graduate admissions. However, you haven't mentioned references, which are important. I think the important things are references, GRE, GPA, and any indication of ability to do the work, such as research accomplishments, summer internships, etc.
