SUMMARY

The new definition of the kilogram, effective today, is based on the Kibble balance and Planck's constant. This shift signifies a move away from physical artifacts to a definition rooted in fundamental constants of nature. The change impacts institutions like the BIPM in Paris, where traditional methods of measurement are now obsolete. Celebratory activities among forum members included personal fitness routines, reflecting a lighthearted acknowledgment of this scientific milestone.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Kibble balance and its function in measurement.
  • Familiarity with Planck's constant and its significance in physics.
  • Basic knowledge of metrology and its historical context.
  • Awareness of the role of the BIPM in international standards.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of the Kibble balance and its applications in modern metrology.
  • Explore the implications of Planck's constant on quantum mechanics and measurement standards.
  • Investigate the historical evolution of the kilogram and previous definitions.
  • Learn about the BIPM's role in global measurement standards and its future directions.
USEFUL FOR

Scientists, metrologists, educators, and anyone interested in the evolution of measurement standards and their implications in science and technology.

gleem, you beat me to the punch!

Let's all celebrate by going out an measuring something!

I celebrated by going for a long walk this morning to try to shed one of my spare kilograms. :woot:

I suppose this means that the official kilogram cleaner at the BIPM in Paris is now out of a job.

I swam laps for a long time (3x15 minute intervals) with intervening soaks in a hot spa.

Contemplated measurement and data collection while watching the warm water mix with the deeper cold.
