The discussion centers around concerns about hazing, or ragging, in university settings, particularly in the context of a new student's upcoming education. Despite the presence of anti-ragging committees and zero tolerance policies, there is a perception that hazing remains common. One participant shares a personal experience of hazing during a military initiation, while another reassures that hazing is typically associated with competitive groups like fraternities or sports teams, suggesting that a math or science student may not encounter such issues. Overall, the conversation reflects a mix of personal anecdotes and reassurances regarding the prevalence of hazing in college environments.

I experienced a form of hazing called the Shellback Initiation in the summer of 1982 while serving in the U.S. Navy. This happens when a vessel crosses the equator. Good times...(Rofl)

I don't condone hazing though...(Wasntme)

In the US this applies to fraternities, marching band and sports. I wouldn't worry about it at all if you going as a math/science student.
