AI Thread Summary
A user recounts the frustrating experience of losing their glasses after a night spent with their grandchildren, who had a pillow party in the bedroom. Despite thorough searches involving multiple family members, the glasses remained missing. The user recalls having the glasses before bed and suspects they may have been moved by the two-year-old, although they believe the five-year-old is innocent. Suggestions from others in the discussion include checking unlikely places like shoes, laundry, and even the refrigerator. The conversation touches on the common experience of misplacing items and the psychological aspects of searching for lost belongings. Ultimately, the user finds the glasses tucked under the bed, camouflaged against a black bin, highlighting how easily items can be overlooked even after extensive searching. The discussion emphasizes the importance of remaining calm and methodical when searching for lost items, as well as the potential for children to inadvertently move things during play.

I am completely stumped. We all are.

On Friday night, I came in from the backyard, checked the clock to see that it was 12:45, took my meds, did my ablutions and went to bed. I took off my glasses and put them on my night table, as I always do.

In the morning, my grandchildren (five and two) came in and had a pillow party, which involves jumping on the bed and rooting around in all the drawers.

When I got up, my glasses were nowhere to be found. The five year old swears she did not hide them. I believe her (she knows how to read a room).. The two year old is too young to interrogate.

I know I had them on when I came inside the night before - because otherwise I would not have been able to read the time on the clock. I only went to my meds cupboard and the bathroom before bed. I am almost certain I had them in bed, else I would not have been able to see the TV.

When I got up, I dd my ablutions before going back or my glasses, and that's when they weren't there.

Over two hours, six of us tore the bedroom apart, then the whole house. We checked everywhere at least six times. Every drawer, nook, cupboard, bin, under every table, in every piece of furniture, toybox, the recycling box, the garbage and even the floor vents.

I've torn the room apart. They're just not in there.
The only reason we suspect the to-year-old at all is because it's the only other possible answer. We have a pretty clear idea where he got to and where he didn't and we;ve checked them all - and everywhere else as well.

So there are only two possibilities: either
  • they are still in the room, near the bed, or
  • the 2-year-old moved them
But 2-year-old don't hide things; they pick things up, and then see another shiny thing, and drop the thing they're holding. It' nowhere a 2yo would drop an object.

And besides, we've searched every possible place anyway.

I'm desparate. I'm looking for fresh ideas where/how to look in a way we haven't already tried.

Obviously you haven't searched everywhere. Pinning it on the two year old? I'm going to guess that you didn't leave them where you always do, that you hid them from yourself.

Clues.
You assumed they were in only one place during the search, but they moved.

They are hidden in plain sight, inside another pair of glasses, or in the wrong case, or down the side of the seat in the car.

Or, they are in the pocket of some piece of clothing that is now in the wash. They came off when you removed some article of clothing over your head. They are now folded and inside the article. You will need to flatten every item, (like ironing), to find them.

Sounds like a good search so far. Be sure to check all shoes and boots -- I've had items get knocked off of tables and end up in shoes/boots.

Did you check the refrigerator? Freezer? Toaster?

Is there anyplace you thought, "no they wouldn't be there?"

What color are they? Where would they blend in?

I like @Baluncore 's idea -- check the laundry.

The kids broke them during the pillow fight. They hid them in a garbage can.

If it were me at that age, I would have held onto the evidence personally until I left the primacies, knowing that a personal search and seizure conducted by any grandparent would only be done under extreme duress.

If you directly said something like, where did I put my glasses in a frustrated tone, they sensed it was "serious". When you left the room to look, the 5 year old took charge of the situation. Tucked it in their waist band temporarily, and played dumb for the safety of themselves and their sibling!

Anyhow, now that you have tore apart the most of house in front of them, you probably won't get a confession.

Its hilarious becuase its true!

Like I said, that's what I've done as a kid.

My 3 year old (at the time) once spent 2 days and nights with a small LEGO up her nose. The 5 year old eventually cracked under the pressure and told not long after the 3 year old told her - running it by the older sister was done as a move of certain despair/discomfort. We had to have it removed by a professional.

Or you have Dementia…

Let us know if your toilet mysteriously becomes clogged in the coming days with normal usage. Not saying the two year old flushed your glasses, but I do believe that's the age when they are most entertained by such things.

Are you either near sighted, or far sighted? If, and I am only guessing on this, if you need only help to see things clearly when they are very near your eyes, you could visit a local retail store (grocery or drug) and look for a helpful pair of non-prescription Readers.

I know, I know. But they are known for playing such pranks.

The 2yo does have a habit of spiritng things away, So: motive, means and opportunity.

Well, that's why I as so careful to backtrack my movements. I know I had them up to five minutes before I went to bed. And I didn't do anting except my ablutions, since it was well after midnight.

I don't wear PJs. Do you know how many times I checked my head? But no, I never had them in the morning. They were already in the wind when I got up.

Bedside table or in the hands of a two year old are the only possibilities. And we had four adults minding the kids.

All six of us checked every pocket of every item, including the laundry bins.

Checked everyting about six times.

Checked all boots and shoes. Under/behind boot racks. All of us.

Checked fridge. Too small to reach toaster. Too small to open freezer.
gmax137 said:

Yes. Cehked everyone of them six times. ASs did every one else.
gmax137 said:

Well, they're virtually frameless, so yeh, they could be hard to spot.

Checed a dozen times between six people.

Garbage cans of course are the first place I looked. The 5yo did once hide them in the little bin by my bed. But not this time.

I even checked his diaper.

No. I know hen she's telling the truth. Also, it wouldn't matter, we've still seeached everywhere.

5yo was very eager to help. eVen long after we'd given up. And no, I odn;t think she's so devious as to make a game of it.

It is possible I have misplaced them. OR would be, if the window of opportunity wasn't so narrow.

Luckily*, my wife suggested I go looking for my old pair. I found it in the fifth box I looked. At least I can drive.

* no luck about it. I married her for a reason.

Thanks. These old pairs are single focal only, not trifocals. Which means your post is the first thing I"ve been able to read all day without squinting or taking them off. Work was fun today. I work on a computer.

Perhaps in the bed somewhere, like down a crack at the side(s) of the mattress? In the some laundry now being centrifuged in the machine or dried in the tumbler? If you have a dog, check the garden for freshly dug holes.

Rimless glasses would be hard to see in water. Were they fed to some aquatic animal in a tank?

Could someone have left a phase conjugate mirror behind them?

Haha. As a matter of fact, the 2yo loves Winston. our Reeves turtle.

Here is Winston attempting to sample her favourite food: wayward fingers:

If the 2yo could get anywhere near the lip of the tank, it would be a serious consideration. But yes, we've checked all around the tank.

Well I found them.

They were literally in the first place I looked in my Deep Search. Took the mattress off the bed and there they were, tucked in under the under-bed bins*.

I had checked under the bed - with a flashlight - during the two-hour, six-person search on the morning they went missing, but my black wire glasses were well-camouflaged next to the black wire bin. So technically, I had clapped eyes on them but didn't make them out.

There is enough clearance under the skirt of the bed that they could have been unwittingly kicked there by a child.

Am I ever glad that the last thing I did before renewing my search was tell mama and gramma that of course I would never it against a two year old if it was him - and the only reason I considered him at all is because it was the only option left!

* the only consequence of my four-minute "deep search" is that I can no longer ignore the colonizaton of the floor under my bed by an army of dust bunnies.

Yesterday I couldn't find my hammer. Until I looked again in the little toolbox, in which the hammer is the largest object. There it was. It's amazing how oblivious the brain can be.

This time, it was the first place. I had only been at my deep search for five minutes.

Same thing happened when I gave up the first search on Saturday and went to gig out my old defunct glasses. Most of my house is still in boxes from our move. So I just started in a random room with a random stack of boxes. My backup glasses were in box six.

Frankly, aside from the actually losing of the glasses, the fates have been veritably smiling on me.

Which, for that sub-search, was the last box you opened, and the last place you looked.

You will always find things in the last place you look, because you stop looking when you find them.

I used to hate that adage. I once was looking for something and, though I eventually found it, I kept looking anyway, just to put the lie to that saying.

  • #32
It's such a common thing. I put away something a couple of months ago and can't remember where I put it. I've looked at all the places it should be and it's not there. Did I throw it out by accident or hide it from myself? My guess is that it will turn up eventually but I'll probably have to buy a new one before that happens.

For some things it's worth having a backup. Glasses can break as well be misplaced.

I didn’t read every post. The grandkids are the difference in your normal routine, right?

Is it possible that your glasses got broken in the pillow party, or perhaps they were taken and played with, and as a result got damaged?

As a kiddo, if I damaged something that was hard to explain, the thought would have occurred to me to put it where the damage wouldn’t be seen.

Edit, glad you found them!

I know you saw the outcome but , to address your question: we had considered the kids.

The 2yo is too young for that kind of trickery, and the 5yo was quite sincere and concerned and we were all satisfied that she was telling the truth and ruled her out.

Glad we did - and assured her so. She has a lifetime ahead of her of the potential for being wrongly accused (especially having a younger sibling); we don't need to plant that seed of neurosis before its time.
