Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the sighting of a C-5 aircraft over the Niagara area, including observations about its size and behavior, as well as personal anecdotes related to aircraft experiences. The scope includes observational accounts and informal commentary rather than technical analysis.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant observed a C-5 circling the Niagara area multiple times and initially questioned its size compared to commercial jets.
  • Another participant humorously suggested the aircraft was simply seeking a better view of Niagara Falls.
  • A participant shared personal photographs of a C-5 taken at an air show, implying that the visual perspective can be misleading regarding the aircraft's size.
  • One participant recounted a past experience of witnessing a large plane flying low in a canyon, expressing uncertainty about how to judge its altitude.
  • There is a repeated inquiry about the "hens," which appears to be a playful reference without further context.
  • Another participant speculated that the C-5 was circling Niagara International Airport, waiting to land.
  • A humorous remark was made about observing another participant taking pictures, indicating a light-hearted interaction among members.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various viewpoints regarding the aircraft's behavior and size, with no clear consensus on the reasons for its flight pattern or the context of the "hens." The discussion remains informal and exploratory.

Contextual Notes

Participants' observations are based on personal experiences and perceptions, which may not provide a complete understanding of the aircraft's operational context or altitude. There is also ambiguity regarding the reference to "hens."

This fella circled the Niagara area at least ten times while I watched. It had the distinct configuration of a C-5 in the wings tail and 4 engines, which was my first thought but it didn't look much larger than a commercial jet.

I was about to post for suggestions about what it was but, checking online, it's pretty clear it's a C-5.

I guess it was just flying higher than I thought.

They just wanted a better view of the falls.

Here are some pictures I took of one at an air show a few years ago to give you perspective of how big it really is: (Dave's pictures don't do it justice).

So where are the hens ?

About 15 years ago, we were on a camping trip to eastern Washington state, in the area where the Columbia river used to run about 10,000-15,000 years ago. The area looks like this:

The campground was in a deep, narrow canyon. We were setting up the tent when suddenly a *huge* plane came screaming down the canyon...I thought it was going to crash on us!

I have no idea how to judge how low it was...but I clearly saw rivets .

No, Dave, we've been watching you. Do you want to see the picture of you taking the pictures?
