SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the protocol for accurately recording an orbit for the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Participants emphasize the necessity of gathering at least three location points to define an orbit, with recommendations on the frequency of data collection depending on the planet's route. The conversation highlights the importance of using a standardized format for recording coordinates, including the units of measurement and the specific points on the orbit that should be documented.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of orbital mechanics and celestial navigation
  • Familiarity with IAU standards for astronomical data
  • Knowledge of coordinate systems used in astronomy
  • Experience with data recording and reporting protocols
NEXT STEPS
  • Research IAU guidelines for orbit determination and reporting
  • Learn about celestial coordinate systems and their applications
  • Study best practices for data collection frequency in astronomy
  • Explore tools for visualizing and recording orbital paths
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, and researchers involved in orbital mechanics and celestial data reporting will benefit from this discussion.

I will greatly appreciate anyone who knows the protocol for accurately recording an orbit for the IAU. I will be looking for 3 points at least.
Do I do this several times a day, a week, a month or only gather 3 points once? I know it depends partly on the route of the planet but when the IAU ask for 3 location points does it mean of one orbit which is then detailed? This seems insufficient but perhaps it's the time involved for proving different potential orbits of greatly varying lengths. Is there an advised table to write the coordinates? What form does this take? What form do the units take? Which points on the orbit do I take?
Thank you kind people.
