Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the hierarchy of knowledge in physics and recommendations for educational resources, including books that cover topics from basic algebra to quantum mechanics and beyond. Participants seek to understand the structure of knowledge in physics and how to navigate their educational journey effectively.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire for a thorough overview of the hierarchy of knowledge in physics and requests recommendations for educational materials.
  • Another participant shares several useful links to websites that may aid in understanding the hierarchy and provide additional resources.
  • A third participant expresses gratitude for the shared resources, indicating they find them valuable for their educational pursuits.
  • A participant mentions they have started compiling a list of topics and recommended books, suggesting a structured approach to learning and indicating that some sections may be omitted based on personal preferences.
  • The list includes various categories such as precalculus, calculus, introductory physics, differential equations, and more, with specific book recommendations highlighted.
  • Some books are noted as optional based on individual interests, such as Matlab programming and engineering topics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of a structured approach to learning physics and the value of recommended resources. However, there is no consensus on a definitive hierarchy of knowledge, as individual preferences and educational paths may vary.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects a variety of educational backgrounds and preferences, with some participants indicating that certain topics or books may not be necessary for everyone. The hierarchy of knowledge remains subjective and dependent on individual learning goals.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals pursuing further education in physics or related fields, educators seeking resources for teaching, and anyone interested in structuring their learning in physics and mathematics may find this discussion beneficial.

I plan on continuing my education to pursue a second degree sometime soon, and I was wondering if some of the more brilliant and experienced academics here might be able to help me out. Essentially what I am looking for is a very thorough overview of the hierarchy of knowledges that physics adheres to in particular, however a general charting is acceptable as well. In addition to a formal hierarchy, I'm also looking for recommendations on books that would take me from basic Algebra all the way through QM and beyond.

I certainly do appreciate any contributions to my topic and my personal quest for knowledge. If my request is a bit vague I'll be glad to clarify, however I am trying to be succinct in order to prevent any confusion.

Wow, thanks a lot! Especially the last link, that looks just great. I'll have some fun looking through these. Thanks!

I actually just started making a list of topics/books yesterday. It needs some tweaking at the moment, but it should still be helpful. Just pick one or two books from each category starting from the top and you're set. I've italicized books that I recommend.

This list also contains topics I'd like to learn, so some sections can be omitted. You don't need Calculus /w Analysis if you dislike proofs, but it'll be worthwhile to take a look at it later in your education. Matlab is good for making graphs (you can purchase a student edition for $100) but can be ignored until upper level classes. Engineering Statics & Dynamics and Mechanics of Materials are engineering topics.
