Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the selection and evaluation of hot-wire and hot-film sensors for characterizing airflow over an airfoil in a wind tunnel. Participants are exploring options for sensor arrays, sharing experiences, and seeking recommendations for suppliers and best practices.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is specifically looking for alternatives to the Senflex sensors from Tao Systems for use in a research project.
  • Another participant suggests that Dantec may also offer similar hot-wire and hot-film probes, but notes limited knowledge of other suppliers.
  • A participant inquires about potential issues with the Tao Systems hot-films and seeks advice on their use and attachment methods.
  • A response indicates that while the participant has not personally worked with the hot-films, colleagues have used them without reported problems, although there is uncertainty about the attachment method.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the availability of alternative suppliers for hot-wire and hot-film sensors, and there is uncertainty regarding the specific experiences with the Tao Systems products.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of detailed information regarding the performance and attachment methods for the hot-film sensors, as well as the specific experiences of participants with different sensor brands.

I work for a research group at my university. We are considering the use of a hot-film sensor array to characterize flow over our a portion of an airfoil in the wind tunnel. We are looking for something like the http://www.taosystem.com/products/senflex/" sensors offered by Tao Systems. I tried searching for more options but Tao Systems was the only company I could find who offered something like this. Does anyone know of any other companies who sell something similar to the Senflex sensors?

You may be able to find something from Dantec, but those are the only two companies that I know of that sell hotwire and hotfilm probes and anemometers.

I know that we have the Tao Systems hotfilms here at our lab.

Thanks for the quick reply! If you don't mind me asking, have you encountered any problems with the Tao Systems hotfilms? Are there any tips or suggestions I should know about? Also, do you guys use the recommended MACfilm adhesive or something different?

I honestly haven't done any work with the hotfilms myself, just several of my colleagues. I don't believe we have come across any problems with them as we keep using them and have been for years. I am not exactly sure how we attach them though to be honest. I work mostly with hotwires myself.
