SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the challenge of using mirrors to create the illusion of a larger moon without digital assistance. A participant suggests that a digital video camera with a good zoom and a beamer is a more practical solution than complex mirror setups. The conversation highlights that the concept aligns closely with building a Newtonian reflector telescope, which utilizes curved mirrors to project images. This approach is deemed simpler and more cost-effective than attempting to construct large curved mirrors for optical projection.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of optical principles related to mirrors and lenses
  • Familiarity with Newtonian reflector telescope design
  • Basic knowledge of digital video cameras and projectors
  • Experience in DIY projects involving optics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the design and construction of Newtonian reflector telescopes
  • Explore the specifications and features of high-zoom digital video cameras
  • Learn about projection techniques using beamers for real-time imaging
  • Investigate alternative optical methods for enlarging distant images
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy enthusiasts, DIY optics hobbyists, and anyone interested in optical illusions or telescope construction will benefit from this discussion.

Hello,

Funny request here. I'm trying figure out a way to mount a series of mirrors to make the moon look bigger or give the illusion that it is bigger. I have no clue how to go about this, I'd appreciate your ideas and thoughts on this.
Thanks

p.s: This is without using a computer. I'd like a real time image of the moon to fall in place on a mirror and make it look much much bigger.

A digital video camera with a good zoom + beamer will give you a real time image. Probably much cheaper and simpler than some big curved mirrors you might need for a purelly optical projection.
