Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around how to input negative exponents, specifically the expression "e^(-x)", on a TI-89 calculator. It includes practical guidance on using the calculator's functions and addressing syntax errors encountered by users.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for help inputting "e^(-x)" on a TI-89 and reports a syntax error when using the "-" key.
  • Another participant suggests consulting the manual, indicating that the correct key to use is the one labeled "(-)", which is different from the standard "-" key.
  • A participant expresses gratitude for the clarification after struggling with the input for a long time.
  • There is a light-hearted exchange about the confusion caused by the two different minus signs on the calculator.
  • One participant, who does not own a TI-89, speculates on the function of the two minus keys, suggesting one is for subtraction and the other for changing the sign of the operand.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need to use the specific "(-)" key for negative exponents, but there is no consensus on the broader implications of using the calculator, as some participants lack direct experience with the TI-89.

Contextual Notes

There may be limitations in understanding the calculator's functions without direct experience, and the discussion does not resolve potential confusion regarding the use of different minus keys.

Who May Find This Useful

Users of the TI-89 calculator, particularly those encountering difficulties with inputting negative exponents or syntax errors.

Have you tried to read manual? It says to not use "-" but (-) (button between dot and enter).

ah tanx a lot i was searching for it all day long !

Did you not notice there are two minus signs? :-p Just kidding. It's okay, we've all done it.

Yeah The 1st minus was the tricky one !

I don't have a TI-89, but my guess is that one of the - keys is for subtraction, and the other is to change the sign of the operand.
