How Do You Calculate Displacement from Dallas to Chicago Using Vectors?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the displacement from Dallas to Chicago using vector analysis. The problem involves two segments: a distance of 730 miles from Dallas to Atlanta at an angle of 5.00 degrees north of east, and a distance of 560 miles from Atlanta to Chicago at an angle of 21 degrees west of north. Participants suggest using the Law of Cosines for accurate displacement calculation, as the segments are not perpendicular. The Pythagorean theorem is not applicable in this scenario due to the angles involved.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vector components and angles
  • Familiarity with the Law of Cosines
  • Basic knowledge of trigonometric functions
  • Ability to perform calculations involving distances and angles
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the Law of Cosines for non-right triangle calculations
  • Learn how to decompose vectors into their components
  • Explore trigonometric identities and their applications in physics
  • Practice solving displacement problems using vector addition
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or mathematics, educators teaching vector analysis, and anyone interested in solving real-world displacement problems using trigonometry.

Homework Statement

a map suggests that atlanta is 730 miles in a direction of 5.00 degrees north of east from dallas. the same map shows that chicago is 560 miles in a direction of 21 degrees west of north from atlanta. modeling the Earth as flat, use this info to find the displacement from dallas to chicago.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

is this just using the pythagorean theorem. is it 7302 + 5602

Only if they are in direction at are right angle to each other.

Maybe you want the Law of Cosines?
