Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the functioning of lawn sprinklers, specifically focusing on how they operate, including the mechanics of rotation and water distribution. Participants explore different types of sprinklers and their operational principles.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests an explanation of how lawn sprinklers work.
  • Another mentions that there are several different types of lawn sprinklers.
  • A participant questions whether the rotation of the sprinkler is caused by a pressure drop in the hoses.
  • One participant suggests that a rotating sprinkler uses the water it expels to propel itself.
  • Another participant agrees that the expulsion of water is what differentiates sprinklers from pumps and notes that there are various types, including domestic and larger scale models with different mechanisms.
  • It is mentioned that a pressure drop contributes energy for the rotation of the sprinkler head.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the specific mechanisms of rotation and the types of sprinklers, indicating multiple competing views and ongoing exploration of the topic.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the types of sprinklers and their mechanisms remain unaddressed, and there are unresolved details regarding the physics of pressure drops and rotation.

Hi friends,
Can anyone please explain the how Lawn Sprinkler works.

Thank You,

How it sprinkles the water around. I mean how it rotates, is pressure drop in the hoses of the sprinkler which rotates it?

A rotating one would just use the water it expels to propel it.

I think they all do that :P That's what makes it different from a pump.

Yaswanth, what kind are you talking about? There are domestic continuously rotating ones, and larger scale ones which have some kind of spring mechanism and change direction.

But basically, yes, there'll be a pressure drop from which energy is used to rotate the head.
