How Does the Casimir Force Relate to the Expansion of the Universe?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the relationship between the Casimir force and the expansion of the universe, highlighting a significant discrepancy where calculations yield a value 10^120 times larger than expected. This discrepancy raises questions about the relevance of the Casimir force in cosmic expansion. The article by John Baez is recommended for further understanding of this issue, particularly regarding the misleading nature of the 10^120 figure.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of quantum field theory concepts
  • Familiarity with the Casimir effect
  • Knowledge of cosmological expansion theories
  • Basic grasp of vacuum energy implications
NEXT STEPS
  • Read John Baez's article on vacuum energy and the Casimir effect
  • Explore theories addressing the cosmological constant problem
  • Investigate alternative models of cosmic expansion
  • Study the implications of quantum fluctuations in cosmology
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, cosmologists, and students interested in quantum mechanics and the fundamental forces of the universe will benefit from this discussion.

This is just a short question, it might have been asked already but I couldn't find anything.
I read that we have attempted to reconcile the Casimir force with the observed expansion of the universe, doing this, we get a number 10^120 times too big. This is obviously a bad number to say the least. So why doesn't the Casimir force have an effect on expansion? Are there any theories that can delete that... bad number.
