How Does Time Travel Influence Aging?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the hypothetical implications of time travel on aging, specifically whether a person would age normally while traveling back in time and living in a different time period. The scope includes conceptual exploration of time travel and its effects on human aging.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant poses a scenario involving time travel to question whether they would age during the time spent in the past.
  • Another participant suggests that time travel is a forbidden topic within the forum, recommending the sci-fi and fantasy section for such discussions.
  • A later reply acknowledges the previous comment about the topic's status in the forum.
  • Another participant argues that while time travel is discussed in popular science, it ultimately lacks empirical evidence and models, making it unanswerable.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the implications of time travel on aging, and there is a general agreement that the topic is contentious and lacks definitive answers.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights limitations related to the lack of empirical data and established models regarding time travel, which affects the ability to draw conclusions.

Let's assume time travel is possible and we are travelling. We jumped to a TARDIS sort of machine in August 26, 2017 and go to August 26, 2000 then lived there for 4 years until August 26, 2004. So when we come back to August 26, 2017 would we be 4 years older or be the same age we were before travelling?

I know it is kind of a lame question but that'd be amazing if you answered this.Thank you already [emoji68]‍[emoji436][emoji177]

I believe time travel is one of the forbidden topics here in our science forums. You might get some answers if you posted it in our sci-fi and fantasy forum.

Although some kind of time travel mechanisms are frequently discussed on popular science platforms or tv-shows, and even some serious scientists like Hawking contributed here, it is in the end not answerable. "If <not observed> Then <anything>" is a pattern which fails to have a basis, and so <anything> could be literally anything and nobody could put evidence on any point of view. That's why we don't discuss it - the lack of data and models.
