How Far Does a 15 kg Object Travel Under Specific Forces in 4 Seconds?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the distance traveled by a 15 kg object subjected to a net force derived from an applied force of 5.5 N and a frictional force of 2.5 N over a duration of 4 seconds. The net force acting on the object is 3 N, calculated by subtracting the frictional force from the applied force. Using Newton's second law, the acceleration is determined to be 0.2 m/s², leading to a distance of 1.6 meters traveled after 4 seconds, calculated using the formula d = 0.5 * a * t².

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's Laws of Motion
  • Basic knowledge of force and acceleration calculations
  • Familiarity with kinematic equations
  • Ability to perform unit conversions and calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Review Newton's second law of motion and its applications
  • Study kinematic equations for uniformly accelerated motion
  • Practice problems involving net force and friction
  • Explore the concept of free body diagrams for force analysis
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, particularly those focusing on mechanics, as well as educators looking for examples of force and motion calculations.

I know this should be an easy question but I am just a tad confused. Here is the question:

A 15 kg object experiences an applied force of 5.5 N[N] and an opposing frictional force of 2.5 N. If the object starts from rest, how far will it have traveled after 4.0s?

It would be wonderful if you could show me step by step. Thanks so much!

The Attempt at a Solution

So, you've already provided the information for #1. What do you think some of the relevant equations and physical concepts are (#2)? What have you done so far to approach this problem (#3)?

Hint: one of Newton's Laws of Motion contains all of the information you need to know in order to solve this problem.
