How is HF used to purify Al in the Hall-Héroult process?

Hello,

As I was going through the properties of HF, I found that it is used to purify Al... which sounds very interesting to me... but unfortunately I wasn't able to find how this process is done...

I will be really thankful if you could provide some information regarding this issue.
