How much electricity does lighting cost compared to other electrical items

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Lighting typically accounts for approximately 10-20% of a household's electricity consumption. To accurately estimate this, one must calculate the total kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage by assessing the number of lights, their wattage, and the average hours they are used per month. This consumption can then be compared to the total electricity bill to determine its significance relative to other appliances such as fridges, freezers, and washing machines.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of kilowatt-hour (kWh) calculations
  • Knowledge of household electrical appliances and their power ratings
  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting electricity bills
  • Basic arithmetic skills for consumption comparisons
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to calculate kWh consumption for various household appliances
  • Learn about energy-efficient lighting options and their impact on electricity costs
  • Explore tools for monitoring household energy usage
  • Investigate the energy consumption of specific appliances like fridges and washing machines
USEFUL FOR

Homeowners, energy auditors, and anyone interested in reducing electricity costs and understanding household energy consumption patterns.

Like a fridge, freezer, or washing machine?

I was wondering if lighting would be a significant consumer of electricity of a regular house like say 10-20%?

Estimate number of lights and their power, number of hours per month - that will give you kWh consumption. Compare it to the total from the electricity bill for the last month and you will know.
