Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding the best training manuals for MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code) and understanding the differences between various versions: MCNP4X, MCNPX, MCNP5, and MCNP6. The scope includes conceptual clarification and resource identification for learning MCNP.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks recommendations for the best training manuals for MCNP and asks about the differences between its versions.
  • Another participant suggests searching online, specifically pointing to the MCNP group's webpage for more information.
  • A different participant mentions that MCNP6 combines functionalities from MCNP5 and MCNPX but does not provide specific distinctions between the versions.
  • One participant indicates that the most reliable information comes from the LANL website and notes that the latest version's documentation is included with installation, although it may be export controlled.
  • A later reply provides a specific location for the MCNP6 documentation file within the installation directory.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best manuals or the specific differences between the MCNP versions, as various suggestions and insights are presented without definitive conclusions.

Contextual Notes

Some limitations include the lack of detailed definitions of the differences between MCNP versions and the reliance on potentially outdated online resources.

Who May Find This Useful

Hey there,

I'm not sure if you are still having problems with this, but I might have a bit of insight here. MCNP6 is a combination of the functionality 5 and x. I don't have the exact definition of what makes those unique off the top of my head though.

The best place to get info on how to use mcnp is actually right from LANL. While you may be able to find the "primer" online, it is likely for the past software editions. The most recent one is export controlled, but fortunately get's loaded onto your computer with installation. Dig around your MCNP file. I guarantee it will be worth it.

The exact location of the documentation file in your installation directory is MCNP_DOCS/MCNP6_REFS/la-cp-13-00634.pdf

Hope this helps.
