Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the modulation of automotive injectors, specifically the methods of controlling their operation. Participants explore various signal types that could be used to operate these injectors, including PWM, voltage modulation, and current modulation.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that automotive injectors operate using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to control their opening and closing during the combustion cycle.
  • Another participant confirms that injectors open once per combustion cycle and emphasizes the importance of fast operation, noting that flow rate is influenced by injector size and fuel pressure.
  • A different participant mentions that they are aware of systems that utilize PWM for injector control and references an article that discusses the topic, although it does not delve deeply into the electrical aspects.
  • One participant expresses interest in further developing the electronics related to injector control.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is some agreement that PWM is a method used for controlling automotive injectors, but the discussion does not reach a consensus on other potential modulation methods like voltage or current modulation.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the specific electrical characteristics or requirements for different modulation methods, nor does it resolve the effectiveness or applicability of voltage or current modulation in this context.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in automotive engineering, electronics, or those working on projects involving fuel injection systems may find this discussion relevant.

Using automotive injectors for a project. I would like to know if the signal to cause injector operation is -

1. PWM 12V, i.e. one off operation
2. Voltage modulation, i.e. the voltage applied controls the output rate.
3. Current modulation
4. Something else. If so what?

Tried an automotive forum, but all I got was "what do you think" troll responses. Looking for real information.

Your #1 is correct. Automotive fuel injectors open once per combustion cycle, and they need to open fast and close fast. The flow rate is determined by injector size and fuel pressure.

The systems I'm aware of are PWM.

Found this article interesting, although it doesn't go very far into the electrical side of injector control.

Hmm, interesting. Now to work on the electronics part, thanks :D
