How to Use Negative Exponents on a Scientific Calculator

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on using negative exponents in calculations with a scientific calculator, specifically the Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS model. The formula PV = PMT * (1 - (1 + i)^-n) / i is analyzed, demonstrating how to compute present value (PV) using a negative exponent. Users are advised to check their calculator's manual for specific functions related to negative exponents and sign changes, particularly the button labeled (-), which may serve this purpose.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of financial formulas, specifically present value calculations.
  • Familiarity with scientific calculators, particularly the Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS model.
  • Basic knowledge of exponents and their mathematical implications.
  • Ability to interpret calculator manuals for specific functions.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to perform exponentiation on the Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS calculator.
  • Learn about financial mathematics, focusing on present value and future value calculations.
  • Explore the use of negative exponents in various mathematical contexts.
  • Review the user manual for the TI-30X IIS to understand all its functions and capabilities.
USEFUL FOR

Students, financial analysts, and anyone using scientific calculators for mathematical computations, particularly in finance and investment scenarios.

Homework Statement

PV = PMT *1-(1+i)^-n / i
PV = 225 * 1- (1+.0055)^-42 / .005
PV = 8417.37

How did they get this. how do you use a negative exponent on a scientific calculator.

sorry for not using ? How did they get this? How do you use a negative exponent on a scientific calculator?

Does your calculator have a Change Sign button? They are sometimes marked +/-.
