Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around which collection of physics texts to start with, specifically comparing the works of Walter Greiner and the Landau and Lifgarbagez collection. The context includes considerations of background knowledge and the suitability of each collection for a first-year master's degree student.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is considering starting with either the Walter Greiner or the Landau and Lifgarbagez collection.
  • Another participant notes that Landau and Lifgarbagez is not a beginning text and suggests the choice depends on the reader's background.
  • A participant identifies themselves as a first-year master's degree student.
  • One suggestion is to access both collections at the library to determine which one is more suitable. They describe Landau's writing as clear but concise, leaving many derivation steps for the reader to fill in, while Greiner is noted for providing more steps but potentially having issues with the English translation.
  • A later reply indicates a decision to start with Landau and then Greiner.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing opinions on the suitability of the texts for a beginner, with some suggesting that Landau may not be appropriate for someone without a strong background, while others provide personal insights into the clarity and completeness of each collection.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the question of which collection is definitively better, as it is contingent on individual background and preferences.

Who May Find This Useful

Students or individuals considering advanced physics texts, particularly those at the master's level, may find this discussion relevant.

I'm not familiar with Greiner, but Landau and Lifgarbagez is not a beginning text, so it depends upon your background.

You should probably get both at the library and find out which one suits you better. My short opinion on them: Landau has very clear language, but in very concise in the mathematical expressions, leaving many steps in derivations to you. Greiner fills in more of the steps, but may be less well written. I have also read bad things about the english translation of Greiner, which I can't comment on since I only used his german books.

thank you i will start with L then G
