Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying a specific term in English for a graphical representation involving roots and intervals of a polynomial function. Participants explore various terms related to graphing and mathematical concepts, particularly in the context of using MathType.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents a graphical scheme and asks for the term used to describe it.
  • Another participant notes the presence of roots and mentions the creation of a quadratic equation with the same roots.
  • A different participant inquires about the terminology for determining when a function is less than zero.
  • Several terms are suggested, including "turning point," "point of inflection," "maxima," and "minimum points," but the specific term for the entire form remains unclear.
  • One participant suggests "graphing" as a potential term for the representation.
  • Another participant humorously suggests it resembles a "guitar tab."
  • A participant mentions that creating a similar format in MathType would likely involve using an array.
  • Further suggestions include "the number line" and "intervals" as possible terms.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various viewpoints and suggestions regarding the terminology, but no consensus is reached on a single term to describe the graphical representation.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes various interpretations and assumptions about the graphical representation, with no definitive resolution on the terminology used.

You know, we make these sorts of schemes:

_________________-1__________4__________->x

x+1- - - - - - - - - - 0------------------------

x-4- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -0------------

(x+1)(x-4)-----------0- - - - - - -0------------

What do you call this?

The reason why I want to know, is to find out how to make this in MathType^^

I see that you have roots
and then you make quadratic equation that has same roots

yes, but what do I call that way to decide when f(x)<0?

The numbers are random, for the purpose for my question..

Turning point?

going to calculus (and assuming that's something to do with polynomials) few other terms are
point of inflection, maxima, minimum points

Yes, thanks, but what do you call the entire form?

What do you call it in your first language?

Graphing?

it's a guitar tab. Try that

I don't know mathtype but if you want to produce something similarly formatted to what you have its most likely going to be some sort of array.

It took me a while to realize that this is what he means. I would definitely call this graphing.
