Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around internet outages and accessibility issues, specifically focusing on the Physics Forums (PF) website. Participants share their experiences regarding connectivity to PF compared to other websites during these outages.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants report being unable to access various websites, citing DNS problems and server outages.
  • Others assert that they can access PF without issues, suggesting that it may not be affected by the same outages.
  • One participant mentions trying to clear cookies as a potential solution, but it did not resolve their issue.
  • There are suggestions to try accessing PF from different geographical locations, with some participants confirming success from various regions.
  • Several participants humorously speculate about the reasons behind the outages, including jokes about Google becoming self-aware and conspiracy theories involving a member named Greg.
  • One participant shares a past experience where they could not reach PF from one network but could access it through another, indicating variability in connectivity.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus; while some can access PF, others experience outages with various websites, leading to differing experiences and interpretations of the situation.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the underlying causes of the connectivity issues, including potential problems with their internet service providers and the role of DNS. There is also a lack of clarity regarding the specific nature of the outages affecting different users.

I can't reach them and I've been told a lot of their servers are down. They have DNS problems.

Didn't help.

Try one for a different geographical location. UK, Canada, India, etc.

I know! I thought maybe my eyes were shrinking.

I suppose I'll adjust, in time.

First I thought I accidently changed the font of my own browser. I lowered it and I got confused with other pages. Then the same thing happened again at work and I figured out some people at Google are playing jokes on us. :bugeye: Is this another unexplained phenomenon ?

This must be part of Greg's plot to take over the internet! Last night my internet was completely down for ALL websites, Instant messaging, everything...EXCEPT PF! PF was the only place I could go, even after clearing cache and cookies. Since I couldn't even reach repair because the line was busy all night, I assume it was my cable service, but why I could reach PF with no problems and post is beyond me.

What's stranger is that the night before, the same thing happened to Kurdt. The internet went down for him and PF was the only place that he could reach.

I had a situation weeks ago, where I could not reach PF from one network (although I could tunnel through AOL to get to PF), but I could reach through another network. I could reach the other usual websites directly from either network though.
