Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the chemical compound 2-methoxyethyl-2-methylpropanoate, specifically exploring its potential properties as a surfactant and its hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB). Participants are examining its structure, possible solubility, and whether it can be classified as a surfactant.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that 2-methoxyethyl-2-methylpropanoate has a systematic name and recommend searching for additional information in resources like the Merck Index.
  • One participant speculates that the compound may be dispersible in water due to its methoxyethyl group, although this is presented as a guess.
  • Another participant notes that the lab experiment involves students creating this ester, indicating a practical context for the discussion.
  • Participants clarify the chemical structure of the compound, identifying the components as isobutyric acid and the methoxyethyl group.
  • There is a suggestion that the compound might behave as a surfactant with a low HLB, referencing the methoxyethyl group as methyl cellosolve.
  • Uncertainty exists regarding the compound's CAS number and specific properties.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the properties of 2-methoxyethyl-2-methylpropanoate, and multiple viewpoints regarding its potential as a surfactant remain. The discussion is characterized by speculation and exploration rather than definitive conclusions.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific property data for the compound, uncertainty about its solubility, and the absence of a CAS number. The discussion also relies on assumptions about the behavior of the compound based on its chemical structure.

You have what appears to be at least a good, systematic name for the compound. You might try an internet search. Other than that, you might try looking in the Merck Index. Does a specific company manufacture that compound? Maybe the company has technical information about it.

With the "methoxyethy" group, a guess might be that this compound is at least dispersible in water, if not soluble in it. That's only a guess.

i don't know of a company that manufacture because this lab experiment is for the students to create that ester .

2-methoxyethyl refers to this ( O-CH2CH2-O-CH3)
2-methylpropanoate is isobutyric acid (ester-form).
Together these are (CH_3)_2-CH-C(O)O-CH_2CH_2-OCH_3

hmm , thanks

but do you happen to know some properties of it?

I don't even know its CAS no.! It might behave as a surfactant with a pretty low HLB. The methoxyethyl group is also known as methyl cellosolve and thus this ester would be the methylcellosolve ester of isobutyric acid (or isobutrate).
