Is a A+ with a 100 more than a A+ with a 97?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the calculation of GPA and the relationship between letter grades and numerical scores. It clarifies that GPA is determined solely by letter grades, with specific values assigned to each grade (e.g., A+ equals 5.00, A equals 4.6666). The percentage scores, such as 100 or 97, do not influence the GPA calculation; an A and an A+ are treated distinctly, but the underlying percentage does not affect the overall GPA. Thus, regardless of whether a student receives all 100s or all 97s, their GPA will reflect the same letter grade value for an A+.

I looked at my report card and saw the g.p.a. was calculated with what letter grade you get(All AP A+ = 5.00, all AP A = 4.6666, all AP A- =4.3333, etc.) but g.p.a. stands for grade point average which is the score in your grade like a 94 is A, 97 is A+, 92 is A-, 71 is C-, etc. so if it averages out by points would a all 100's yield a higher g.p.a. than a all 97's even though there both a A+?

no.

your gpa will olny reflect the letter grade

Nope. An A is an A, an A+ is an A+ etc.

The actual percentage plays no part in calculating a conventional GPA.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
