SUMMARY

Edward Witten, born in 1951, is celebrated for unifying the five different versions of string theory into M-theory. This discussion highlights his dual identity as both a mathematician and a physicist, emphasizing his contributions to theoretical physics. Participants express admiration for Witten's intellect and character, noting his significance in the scientific community. The conversation also touches on the distinction between the roles of mathematicians and physicists, particularly in relation to experimental work.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of string theory and its five versions
  • Familiarity with M-theory concepts
  • Basic knowledge of the roles of mathematicians versus physicists
  • Awareness of Edward Witten's contributions to theoretical physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of M-theory and its implications in modern physics
  • Explore the five versions of string theory and their interconnections
  • Study the impact of Edward Witten's work on contemporary theoretical physics
  • Investigate the differences between theoretical and experimental physics methodologies
USEFUL FOR

For those who don't know Ed Witten united the 5 different versions of string theory into M-theory

more info... or just search google

bottom line he is possibly the smartest man alive

no way...

Tom, do you seriously think some people don't know Witten :surprise:

Only as someone who knows he is also just a nice guy. Not only an alien!
Birthdays are a time for the rest of us to celebrate someone's life and work.

How old is he this year?

I think the Who's Who and other sources put him in 1951

and this gives what exactly?!
he's a mathematical genius but i don't know much about as a physicist because as you know physicists are bound to experiments and not to their paperwork.

Sorry I don't understand what this has to do with Ed's Birthday which was August 26th, so long ago now it's almost his NEXT birthday
