SUMMARY

The discussion centers on identifying unknown vitamin capsules, specifically questioning whether a home test can determine if a powder is magnesium. While the idea of using a home spectrometer is mentioned, it is concluded that practical testing methods are not feasible. The consensus strongly advises against consuming unidentified pills due to potential health risks, recommending the disposal of all questionable vitamins and purchasing new, clearly labeled bottles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of vitamin supplements and their forms
  • Familiarity with home testing methods for chemical identification
  • Knowledge of the risks associated with consuming unidentified substances
  • Awareness of safe practices in supplement consumption
NEXT STEPS
  • Research home spectrometry techniques for chemical analysis
  • Learn about safe disposal methods for unidentified supplements
  • Investigate labeling standards for vitamin and supplement packaging
  • Explore the health implications of consuming unknown substances
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for health-conscious individuals, supplement users, and anyone involved in the formulation or distribution of vitamins and dietary supplements.

I have a bottle with some vitamin capsules that got mixed up with other vitamins and I can't remember what it is but I'm almost sure it's magnesium.

Is there a test I can do like drop the powder of the capsule into some kind of liquid and I would be able to tell if it's magnesium?

It would be a magnesium compound - which in theory could be discovered with a home spectrometer.
But in all practicality - NO.

If there is any significant risk of harm, I would strongly advise tossing all the pills out.

The pills probably cost less than $20. Small insurance.

I'm sorry but this is just asking for trouble. Please get new bottles of vitamins if you can't tell what's what. Thread locked.
