Is Space Infinitely Small and Large Without a Medium?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the nature of space, specifically whether it can be considered infinitely small and large in the absence of a medium, such as ether. Participants explore the implications of dividing space and the concept of a medium in this context.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if the absence of a medium implies that space is infinitely small and large.
  • Another participant argues that one does not imply the other, suggesting a disagreement on the relationship between space and medium.
  • A participant seeks clarification on what is meant by space being infinitely small and large.
  • One participant proposes that infinitely small space could be conceptualized as being endlessly divisible without encountering a medium or singularity.
  • Conversely, the same participant suggests that infinitely large space could be viewed as being endlessly expandable without limits.
  • There is a challenge regarding the definition of "medium," with participants indicating differing interpretations of the term.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus, as there are competing views regarding the implications of space being infinitely small and large and the definition of a medium.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved definitions and assumptions regarding the concept of a medium and the nature of space, which may affect the clarity of the discussion.

Hello,
Quick question. If space doesn't have, or consist of, an medium (ether?) would that mean space is infinitely small and large?

What do you mean by space being infinitely small and large?

By infinitely small, I meant, for example a cm^3 of space could be "cut" in half forever, without finding a medium or point of singularity. And the opposite: a cm^3 cube doubled forever without running out of space.

I was just wondering .. if you come to point where you can't divide space anymore, could that last point be considered a medium?

No, that's no what "medium" means here.

What do you call it?
