Is Sterilizing Jars Really That Dangerous?

So how dangerous can this be, well dangerous enough for me to have a great welt across my arm, i thought all one would have to do is fill the jar with boiling water and give it a shake, wrong, the water finds its way past an imperfect seal and blasts out a jet of steam,
on a 1 to 10 it is a 7 for ouch factor.

Alternatively add boiling water and shake - lid forms a perfect seal.
Water cools, creates vacuum, can't get lid off.
Use sharp screwdriver to try and lift lid to let air in.
Screwdriver slips and embeds in palm of hand - ouch factor 6/7.
 
I was thinking the other day, maybe next summer I can figure out how to cut my lawn with explosives. Y'know... shaped charges, like they use for opening a safe? :wink:
