AI Thread Summary
The recent surge in PF traffic appears to correlate with the academic season, particularly as universities resume for the spring semester. Observations indicate a notable increase in user engagement, with mentors handling double the issues in January compared to December. There is a mix of university-related inquiries and questions from new users not affiliated with academia. This seasonal trend suggests that the academic calendar significantly impacts forum activity. Overall, the increase in traffic is viewed positively, highlighting the cyclical nature of user engagement in relation to academic schedules.

I have noticed an increase, could be back to school weeks but just seems a little more than usual.
No hard data other than me noticing.
A good thing if correct.

Yep, PF is very seasonal. Most universities came back for the spring semester this week.

I can say that the Mentors handled about twice the number of issues in January (so far) compared to all of December. Can we send all the students back home for some more holidays please...?

The reason I asked was, even taking into account return to Uni lads and lassies, I noticed a newbie increase asking questions of a non uni type.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
