Kaon Physics: CP Violation and Hadronic Matrix Elements

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the preparation needed for reading a specific reference on Kaon Physics, particularly focusing on CP violation and hadronic matrix elements. Participants share their familiarity with quantum mechanics and suggest resources for further study.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about their readiness to read the reference on Kaon Physics, citing familiarity with quantum mechanics at a graduate level but feeling rusty.
  • Another participant suggests that working through a textbook at the level of Griffiths would be beneficial.
  • A participant seeks clarification on whether the recommended Griffiths text is "Introduction to Elementary Particles" and asks for alternative suggestions.
  • There is a discussion about comparing Griffiths with other texts, with one participant mentioning they have ordered Griffiths and are open to alternatives.
  • Another participant recommends "Modern Particle Physics" by Mark Thomson as a potential alternative to Griffiths.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for a foundational text to prepare for the Kaon Physics reference, but there are differing opinions on which texts are most suitable.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about their current knowledge level and the adequacy of their chosen resources, highlighting a potential gap in preparation for the advanced material.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in Kaon Physics, CP violation, and hadronic matrix elements, as well as those seeking foundational texts in particle physics.

What would be reasonable preparation for reading the reference Kaon Physics https://arxiv.org/pdf/hep-ph/0401236.pdf

I find I do not seem to be ready for this reading. I am familiar with quantum mechanics at the level of Schiff (an old text for first year graduate students) though perhaps rusty in some areas.

I think, based on this and other questions, you need to work through a textbook at the level of Griffiths.

Thanks.

Would that be Griffiths "Introduction to Elementary Particles"? Are there any alternatives?

Probably. What's wrong with Griffiths?

I just wanted to compare two texts. But I am OK with Griffiths. In fact, I have ordered it. It should come in a week or so.

You said "at the level of Griffiths" so I assumed there were other texts at the same level. I didn't mean to sound critical.
