Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the re-establishment of circulating beams at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, including reactions to this event, concerns about black hole production, and commentary on public perception and communication from CERN. The scope includes technical aspects of particle acceleration, public relations, and speculative concerns regarding safety.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express excitement about the LHC re-establishing circulating beams and the implications for future experiments.
  • Concerns are raised about public perception, with references to statements from CERN that some find unhelpful or reminiscent of fictional narratives.
  • There is a claim that the LHC is currently injecting proton beams at 450 GeV, which is lower than the Tevatron's historical energy levels, suggesting that black hole production is not a concern until higher energies are reached.
  • Another participant asserts that there is no need to worry about black hole production at all.
  • Humorous remarks are made regarding the anthropomorphism of particle accelerators and the patience required during the LHC's operational delays.
  • Participants share links to external sites related to the LHC and its safety, indicating a mix of serious and lighthearted engagement with the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of excitement and skepticism regarding the LHC's operations and safety concerns, with no clear consensus on the implications of black hole production or the effectiveness of CERN's communication strategies.

Contextual Notes

Some statements rely on assumptions about the safety of black hole production and the effectiveness of CERN's public relations, which remain unresolved in the discussion.

Last night the LHC re-established circulating beams.

CERN has issued a http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressReleases/Releases2009/PR16.09E.html" .

And don't forget to regulalry check http://www.HasTheLhcDestroyedTheEarth.com/

 "If you can check this link, then the answer is probably..."

Still, statements like this one from CERN in V50's link are probably not real helpful:
“The LHC is a far better understood machine than it was a year ago,” said CERN’s Director for Accelerators, Steve Myers.

Sounds too much like HAL, or the Forbin Project. A little more careful PR person should probably be hired...

EDIT -- Never anthropomorphise particle accelerators. They hate it when you do that.

The first time I read that quote, I thought, "It's not a bad machine - it's just misunderstood!"

I blame it all on the mini black holes they are generating.

The LHC is injecting the two proton beams from the SPS at 450 GeV. This lower than the energy reached by the Tevatron (512 GeV) on July 3, 1983, the first day acceleration was attempted. The Tevatron collider is now (and has been for many years) running at about 980 GeV per beam (proton on anti-proton). So until the LHC energy exceeds 980 GeV per beam, there is no need to worry about black hole production.

There is no need to worry about black hole production period.

The LHC certainly tried everyone's patience. I'm happy they got it powered up. It felt like a countdown to a new year.

LHC has 2 countercirculating beams now.

First collisions (at injection energy) this afternoon.

And Geneva is still on the map, right?

Maps actualization is a slow process.
