Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a comprehensive list of the largest lakes in every European country. Participants explore various sources and methods to compile this information, including online resources and data from software tools.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a need for a list of the largest lakes in Europe, noting the difficulty in finding such a resource online.
  • Another participant provides a link to a Wikipedia page that lists the largest lakes in Europe, while humorously misidentifying the Nile as a lake in Europe.
  • A third participant corrects the previous post by clarifying that the Nile is not a lake.
  • Specific examples of the largest lakes in Norway (Mjøsa) and Sweden (Vänern) are mentioned by a participant.
  • A participant shares data from Mathematica 7, listing the water area of various countries in Europe, which may relate to the size of lakes, although it does not directly answer the original query.
  • Another participant reminds others not to double post and references a previous contribution that provided a useful link.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a definitive list of the largest lakes, and multiple viewpoints and sources are presented without resolution.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes references to various data sources and tools, but there are limitations in the completeness of the information provided, as not all countries are represented in the Mathematica data, and some participants express confusion about the classification of certain bodies of water.

I'm searching a list of the largest lake in every European country. Of course, I can google them one by one, but it would be easier if there is a list somewhere on the internet. However, I can't find any...

The closest thing that I could find in the country data in Mathematica 7 to "largest lake" is "WaterArea", here is a list (the water area is expressed in square kilometers):

In : = TableForm[{#, CountryData[#, "WaterArea"]} & /@ CountryData["Europe"]]

Out : =
