High School Looking for a list of astronomy collaborations

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the need for a comprehensive list of astronomy and astrophysics collaborations, specifically mentioning groups like IceCube, HESS, DESI, GAIA, ACT, and GRAND. Users are seeking a resource that includes acronyms, full names, and brief descriptions of each collaboration's purpose. A Wikipedia page on astronomy acronyms was referenced, but it lacks some key collaborations. The user also contributed additional acronyms such as XRISM and CGM to the discussion.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of astronomy and astrophysics terminology
  • Familiarity with academic publishing and preprint repositories like arXiv
  • Knowledge of major astronomy collaborations and their functions
  • Basic research skills for navigating online resources
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its contributions to astrophysics
  • Explore the HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System) collaboration and its findings
  • Investigate the DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) project and its objectives
  • Review the Wikipedia page on astronomy acronyms for updates and additional collaborations
USEFUL FOR

Astronomy students, researchers in astrophysics, and anyone interested in understanding the landscape of collaborative efforts in astronomy will benefit from this discussion.

TL;DR
Reading preprints at arXiv I see many astronomy collaborations publish papers from time to time and was wondering if there is a good, more or less comprehensive list somewhere.
Reading preprints at arXiv I see many astronomy/astrophysics collaborations publish papers from time to time (e.g. IceCube, HESS, DESI, GAIA, ACT, GRAND).

Could someone point me to a good, more or less comprehensive, list somewhere (like a Wikipedia page that I don't know the name of, an arXiv reference page, or a directory from a university astronomy department for job hunting new graduates), that includes acronyms, spelled out names, and a sentence or two description of what each one does (e.g. "IceCube is a collaboration centered around an Antarctica based neutrino observatory.")?

My own quick searches haven't turned up this kind of list, but I could easily be trying to use the wrong kind of search terms.

Alternatively, if there aren't too many of them, and someone finds it easy enough to do, could someone make a list in a post or two on this thread?

I could probably skim preprints for dozens of hours and make a list like that myself, but there is no point in reinventing the wheel if something like that already exists and is done by someone who is more of an expert in the field than I am. In addition to the time involved, I'm more likely to miss an important collaboration that, for whatever reason, hasn't published many papers all that recently.

My intuitive sense is that there are a lot more astronomy/astrophysics collaborations out there than there are high energy physics collaborations.

This is a Wikipedia page of astronomy acronyms listing HESS, DESI, GAIA, but not IceCube, ACT, or GRAND.

However, IceCube is also known as ICL or IC, and it is in the list.

I added IC, ACT, GRAND, XRISM and CGM.
