Here's an interesting article by the AMS about mathematics in Sub-Saharan Africa. Also note the quotation on top:

Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country. (David Hilbert)

This article provides snapshots of experiences of several mathematicians who have done research and teaching in Sub-Saharan Africa. While each snapshot encapsulates the writer’s personal viewpoint on mathematics in Africa, there is a common theme to them all: The interest in mathematics is there, but Africans need more opportunities and resources to develop the continent’s talent base.

What shall I say: You're welcome!

Wow, this is a great article. For so long Africa has been denied a place n the academic world in part because it’s best students had to leave for other places. Now they and others return to lift Africa out of academic poverty one field at a time.
