Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around how to create a reference in MS Excel that dynamically points to another cell based on the content of a different cell. The context includes exploring methods to achieve this through formulas or VBA, with a specific application mentioned for creating flashcards.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks if it's possible to reference a cell based on the content of another cell, specifically wanting to reference cell B6 as J10 using the value in A1.
  • Another participant confirms the idea of a double reference and notes that the feasibility may depend on the programming language used.
  • A suggestion is made to use a VBA macro to achieve the desired referencing, as the participant is unsure how to do it with standard formulas.
  • One participant recommends using the "Paste Reference" feature in Excel, indicating that more details would be helpful for providing a specific example.
  • A later reply expresses a moment of confusion regarding the Excel context of the original question, indicating a misunderstanding of the initial post.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion includes multiple viewpoints on how to achieve the desired referencing in Excel, with no consensus on the best method or solution presented.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully clarified the origin of the number "10" in the reference, and there may be assumptions about the user's familiarity with Excel features and VBA programming.

Is there any way to make a referance to a cell that contains a number for another referance?

Like this.

cell A1 contains "J".

I want cell B6 = J10 by referance of A1.

I'm trying to make a spreadsheet that makes a list into flash cards BTW...if anyone knows a 3rd party program (for free) that does that.

A double reference? so you want to create a reference to another reference? Yes.

If you mean have two references set to the same cell, then it depends on the language.

So essentially you want to go to cell
(A1's letter)10

I would make a VBA macro for that because I'm not sure how it would be done with just formulas.

You can use "Paste Reference" instead of pasting a value. Check out the Excel Help on Paste Reference. If that doesn't work, post more details about what you want to do and I can do an example for you. (For example, where did the 10 come from in your original post?)

err... wait, apparently I was not reading well when I posted... I was did not notice the excel part :-P wow I feel stupid.
