Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the decision-making process regarding pursuing a Master's degree in physics or applied mathematics after clearing the IIT JEE exam, particularly in light of the participant's rank and options available for further studies.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about whether to pursue an M.Sc. in physics or mathematics given their IIT JEE rank.
  • Another participant argues that the rank should not deter someone from pursuing a Master's if they have a genuine interest in basic sciences.
  • A participant shares their own rank of 5785 and seeks further advice on the decision.
  • Discussion includes suggestions to apply for desired courses rather than settling for what is available based on rank.
  • Participants discuss other entrance exams like AIEEE and CEE, with one sharing their ranks and asking about the relative merits of different institutions.
  • There is a mention of the changing landscape of college admissions and streams available, indicating uncertainty about current conditions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best course of action, as opinions vary on the importance of rank versus personal interest in the subject matter.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific information on current admission standards and the evolving nature of college rankings and streams.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering graduate studies in physics or applied mathematics, particularly those navigating similar admission challenges and uncertainties regarding their academic choices.

i am in confusion. i recently cleared my iitjee exam. but unfortunately my rank is not that good. i just wanted to enquire whether taking a Msc. course in physics or mathematics is a good choice.

Doing M.Sc. in physics or mathematics has got nothing to do with good or bad rank. If you are genuinely interested in doing basic sciences, I would suggest you to go for it, else you won't be able to do full justice to the subject or your life.

What bad rank did you get anyway?

Oh.. i got 5785 only..

ok. I think( and i didn't do this when I was in a similar position) you should just go to the counseling and apply for the course you wanted to do( NOT what you can get now) . What about other things like AIEEE, etc?

Aieee i got 4531 rank..general category.Since i am in Delhi, i also had written CEE in which i got 175 rank. So what did you join? which is better NSIT or DCE ?

lol I made kind of eccentric choice, let's talk about you only:wink:

I am not from delhi, so don't really know which ones better, sorry. AIEEE that rank can get you decent stream from a decent NIT (again that's the case when I was there, things must've changed now). What stream/college did you want?
