Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around seeking guidance for entering the field of M-theory and supersymmetry, including recommendations for foundational papers and resources. Participants share their experiences and suggest approaches for a student interested in these advanced theoretical physics topics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to begin research in M-theory and seeks advice on foundational papers to read.
  • Another participant recommends starting with Zwiebach's work, followed by Green-Schwarz-Witten and Tong's lecture notes, as well as West's contributions.
  • A suggestion is made to consult instructors for personalized guidance based on the student's academic background.
  • The original poster acknowledges the recommendations and expresses gratitude while mentioning difficulties in finding peers studying the same field.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of foundational texts and the value of consulting instructors, but there is no consensus on specific pathways or resources beyond the mentioned recommendations.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the original poster's lack of access to peers in the field and the potential variability in recommendations based on individual academic backgrounds.

Hi, I am very interested in superspring and M-theory and hope to begin reserches on these fields. Could anone provide me some advice on how to enter into this field ? or could anyone suggests some foremost paper for me to read ? Thanks a lot !

by the way, I am a student studying physics undergraduately. Although my research in post graduate not concerns on fundamental physics, I have been always interted in these theories.

I'd start with Zwiebach. After that, green-schwarz-witten combined with Tong's lecture notes are good. I also like West.

Have you approached any of your instructors with this question? He/she, more than anyone of us on here, should know more about your academic background and will be able to give you a more appropriate recommendation.

thank you, ZapperZ, you gave me a good advice. I will try. But I still do not find some people who study this field around me.
