Network sharing and internet access simultaneously?

In summary, the conversation discusses the issue of two computers not being able to see each other on a network. Both computers have access to the internet and the individual is attempting to use the Add Network Place Wizard to access a shared folder on one of the computers. However, when typing in the correct path, an error message appears stating that the folder is not valid. The individual suggests checking the names and running the network setup on both computers, as well as setting access rights for folder sharing.

I can't seem to get my two computers to see each other on my network. Both computers have direct access to the intenet via a Linksys Access Point / router and DSL.

I'm at Add Network Place Wizard and I know the name of the target computer (VIRGINIA) and a shared folder (temp) on it.

When I type \\VIRGINIA\temp it alerts me with

A dialogue box appears and says The folder you have entered does not appear to be valid. I've double-checked the names - I'm pretty sure it's something else.

I assume your running windows and have run the "Setup a home or small office network" on both computers?

Then you need to set access rights to allow folder browsing/sharing across the network.

It is possible to have network sharing and internet access simultaneously. However, there are a few things that may be preventing your two computers from seeing each other on the network.

First, make sure that both computers are connected to the same network. This means that they should both be connected to the same router or access point, and have the same network name and password.

Next, check your network sharing settings on both computers. Make sure that network sharing is turned on and that the folders you want to share are set to be shared.

If you are still having trouble accessing the shared folder, it is possible that your firewall settings are blocking the connection. Try temporarily turning off your firewall and see if you are able to access the shared folder.

If none of these solutions work, it is possible that there may be an issue with your network hardware or configuration. You may want to consult with a technician or IT specialist for further assistance.

1. How does network sharing work?

Network sharing allows multiple devices to connect to a single network and share resources, such as files and internet access. This is typically done through a router or access point, which acts as a central hub for the devices to communicate with each other.

2. Can I share internet access with others while using it myself?

Yes, you can share internet access with others while also using it yourself. This is possible through the use of a router or access point, which allows for multiple devices to connect to the internet simultaneously.

3. What are the benefits of network sharing?

Network sharing allows for easier collaboration and sharing of resources among multiple devices. It also helps to reduce the need for each device to have its own internet connection, which can save on costs.

4. Are there any security risks associated with network sharing?

Yes, there are potential security risks with network sharing, as it opens up the network to additional devices. It is important to properly secure the network and devices connected to it to prevent unauthorized access.

5. Can I control which devices have access to my network when sharing it?

Yes, you can control which devices have access to your network when sharing it. This can be done through various methods such as setting a password for the network or using network access control (NAC) systems.
