AI Thread Summary
A company has announced a $1.9 billion investment in a computer chip manufacturing facility in Burlington, Kansas, projected to create around 1,200 jobs. This move reflects a growing trend among integrated circuit manufacturers to establish production outside of Asia due to regional instabilities. The choice of Burlington raises questions about its location, as it is not near major airports, although there is a small airport that could be upgraded. The economic impact is significant, with the potential for one job per household in the area.

Nice, that's good news. It's definitely starting to be a trend for IC manufacturers to add production facilities in places other than Asia because of instabilities in that region.

Kansas has pretty girls.

I wonder why they picked Burlington (which I had to look up). 1200 jobs is one per household. That's a lot. And it's not really near any major airports - Topeka, and then Wichita, Kansas City, Manhattan etc. are twice as far.

I agree that the issues of building in Asia have come into sharper focus recently.

It looks like Burlington does have a small airport, which I'm sure they could upgrade if desired. Good thing they didn't pick Linders IMO, just sayin'...

I know that's right.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
