Order parameter in quasicrystals

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of the order parameter in quasicrystals, exploring the nature of symmetry breaking in these materials compared to other types of crystals, such as liquid crystals.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether the order parameter in quasicrystals is solely related to broken rotational symmetry.
  • Another participant suggests a possible confusion between quasicrystals and liquid crystals, indicating a need for clarification.
  • A later reply confirms the focus on quasicrystals, specifically mentioning their unique five or ten-fold symmetry and referencing a recent Nobel Prize related to this topic.
  • It is noted that ordinary crystals also break rotational symmetry, but quasicrystals are characterized by breaking the strict periodic lattice structure.
  • A participant acknowledges the information regarding the chemistry Nobel Prize, indicating a connection to the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the nature of order parameters in quasicrystals and whether they can be compared to liquid crystals. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the specifics of the order parameter.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of consensus on the definitions and implications of order parameters in the context of quasicrystals versus other crystal types, as well as the implications of symmetry breaking.

What's the order parameter in quasi crystals? Only the broken rotational symmetry?

No, the ones with five or 10 fold symmetry, the last Nobel prize was given for.

well, even ordinary crystals break rotational symmetry. what quasicrystals break is the strict periodic lattice.

I just saw the chemistry nobel prize press release. thanks for the info.
