SUMMARY

Postgraduate research programs in nanofabrication are accessible to candidates with a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering, contrary to the belief that they are limited to physicists or electrical engineers. At institutions like CU, the Mechanical Department actively engages in nano-micro fabrication research, providing opportunities for students to collaborate with faculty on projects. Prospective students should directly approach professors involved in nanofabrication to inquire about research positions and funding availability.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of nanofabrication techniques and processes
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles
  • Knowledge of research methodologies in engineering
  • Ability to engage in academic networking and outreach
NEXT STEPS
  • Research available postgraduate programs in nanofabrication at universities
  • Explore faculty research interests in nano-micro technologies at your institution
  • Learn about funding opportunities for engineering research projects
  • Develop a proposal for potential research collaboration with faculty
USEFUL FOR

Graduate students in engineering, particularly those in Mechanical Engineering, and individuals interested in pursuing research opportunities in nanofabrication and microfabrication technologies.

I am currently nearing the end of an MEng in Mechanical Engineering but have developed a strong personal interest in the field of nanofabrication. Are there post grad research programmes available in this field for someone with my background or are they open exclusively to physicists/electrical and electronic engineers?

I just joined this forum in hope that there is some micro-nano fab discussions going on. I am a post grad, (graduated in Dec 2010) finishing up some nano fab research. Here at CU, nano-micro fab is pretty big in the Mechanical Department. Any professor with budget and confidence in you can hire you on post grad to help with research. Not sure what the official title is. My suggestion is go to the departments staff page, look up which profs are researching nano-micro technologies and ask them for a job in person.
